Q&A with Kat Fulton, Impact Director at Kanso FM

Q, What motivated you to achieve so much so early in your career?
Kat
I’ve always loved people, not just selling to them but really understanding what matters to them. At 18, I realised that if I listened carefully and built genuine trust, the sales naturally followed. In Menorca, I had to sell to large groups at welcome meetings, where I would bring the island to life through stories and theatre. That experience taught me that success isn’t just about pushing products, it’s about creating meaningful experiences. Those lessons stayed with me and shaped the way I approach growth to this day.

Q, By 21, you were already leading sales and marketing across Scotland. How did you handle that responsibility so young?
Kat
It was definitely challenging. I was working alongside people with decades more experience, and I had to prove myself every single day. What helped was my sheer determination and the belief that I could make a difference if I stayed focused. My dad was also my biggest sounding board at the time; we’d go on long walks where he’d just listen and guide me to clarity. That grounding gave me the confidence to stand tall, even in difficult moments, and it shaped how I lead with conviction today.

Q, You’ve worked internationally, including time in the Balearics, Dubai, and Saudi Arabia. How did those experiences shape your leadership style?

Kat
Working internationally taught me adaptability more than anything else. Training Saudi princesses, for example, wasn’t just about fitness, it was about respect, trust, and working within very different cultural expectations. Every country I lived in pushed me to adjust how I communicated and how I built relationships. I learned that leadership isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach; it’s about connecting with people in a way that resonates with their values and culture. That flexibility has become one of my greatest strengths.

Q, You also launched and ran health clubs in the UK. What challenges did you face, and what moments stand out as highlights?

Kat
Launching brand-new health clubs was all about building credibility. People were asked to sign up before we had even opened the doors, so trust was everything. The biggest challenge was inspiring confidence in something they couldn’t yet see, which meant strong marketing, visible leadership, and community engagement. My proudest moment was the Enfield launch, which delivered the highest pre-sales of the year. That experience proved to me that when you combine energy, vision, and community connection, amazing results follow.

Driving Growth with Purpose

Q, You’ve managed multimillion-pound budgets and led large teams. What’s the key to balancing people leadership with commercial responsibility?

Kat
For me, leadership at scale is always about balance. You can’t run a £20m P&L if you’re only looking at spreadsheets, the people behind the numbers are what make it work. Leading a team of 60+ meant being visible, approachable, and crystal clear about goals, while still holding myself accountable for the financial performance. I believe strong commercial outcomes come when you empower people to do their best work and feel invested in the bigger picture.

Q, In FM, you’ve achieved huge sales success. What’s your approach when it comes to winning major contracts?
Kat
My approach has always been rooted in relationships and trust. Clients don’t just want a supplier; they want a partner who understands their world and has the vision to support it. I take the time to get under the skin of their challenges and then bring energy, creativity, and solutions to the table. For me, authenticity and consistency are key, when clients see that you genuinely care about their outcomes, you earn their trust and their long-term business.

Q, In Dubai, you set up a business working with athletes and investors. What role did you play in making that venture a success?
Kat
I was responsible for building the commercial structure that turned the vision into a viable business. That meant forming partnerships, managing client relationships, and creating systems that gave us credibility from the very beginning. Working with athletes and high-profile clients required trust and reliability above all else. I learned how to turn big ideas into sustainable delivery, and that ability has been invaluable in every leadership role since.

Q, Outside of work, you’ve competed in bodybuilding and trained in multiple fitness disciplines. How has sport influenced you as a leader?
Kat
Competitive sport, especially bodybuilding, teaches you discipline like nothing else. You learn patience, resilience, and the importance of consistency, even when results aren’t immediate. For me, sport has also reinforced the idea that progress is about adapting and improving every single day. Those lessons translate directly into leadership, whether it’s a big contract or a team challenge, I approach it with the same mindset: stay focused, adapt when needed, and never give up.

Q, You balance leadership, personal passions, and family life. How do you maintain energy across all areas?
Kat
I’m very intentional about my priorities, family, work, and health are at the centre of everything I do. I’ve also always believed that movement is medicine. Staying active, whether through training or simply walking, keeps me grounded and energised, both mentally and physically. I’ve found that energy creates energy: the more I give to each area of my life, the more momentum I build. It’s not about perfection; it’s about balance and ensuring that all the things that matter most get the attention they deserve.

Q, Looking ahead, what does success mean to you in the next five years?

Kat
For me, success means leading with the perspective of an owner, steering growth, shaping strategy, and building a business that delivers both performance and purpose. It’s about influencing direction at the highest level, ensuring that people, culture, and sustainability are at the centre of long-term value creation. Personally, success is also about balance, spending more time between Portugal, the UK, and Australia, and strengthening the family connections that mean everything to me. Success, to me, is showing that ambition and family can thrive together, and that leadership is as much about harmony as it is about performance.
